How to Start Homeschooling

Congratulations! You’ve decided to start homeschooling! If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension, don’t worry—that’s totally normal. After all, the decision to homeschool is an important commitment and responsibility, but the rewards are incredible. Is it a big undertaking? YES! However, it’s also the start of an amazing journey for your family. And we’re here to help with any questions you have along the way!

Before You Start Homeschooling

The first step is, of course, to shop for school supplies, right? ☺ However, before you jump into scouring the back-to-school sales, it’s essential to take some time to research and explore the requirements for homeschooling in your state. Just do a web search for “homeschool laws and requirements for [insert state name]” and you’ll be on your way! Since every state is different, you’ll want to be sure you’re in compliance with all requirements right from the start.

With that taken care of, invest some time in expanding your vision of what homeschooling can look like. Additionally, remember that it doesn’t have to look like public school. In fact, trying to make a homeschool function like a public school is a major cause of burnout among homeschooling families. Instead, embrace the freedom that comes from learning in the home environment and structure your homeschool to be its authentic best—not a carbon copy of “traditional” school.

8 Tips for New Homeschoolers

In some ways, you’ll find that homeschooling is both easier and harder than you might think. However, fear not! Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you get started on the path to success!

  1. Find out what motivates your child.

Every child is unique, and you’ll want to tailor the educational experience to maximize motivation.

  2. Understand your family’s personalities and dynamics.

Since you’ll be spending a lot of time together, it may take some time to discover which educational programs and curricula resonate with each member of your family. For instance, you might be teaching multiple children, including preschoolers and older kids, or you might have a child who struggles with learning. Therefore, take all the time you need to explore and discover what works best.

  3. Consider a simple schedule.

Don’t be scared! This doesn’t have to be complicated or strict. You don’t even have to follow it every day. However, it can be very helpful to have a general guideline to structure your days. Many kids thrive on a predictable schedule that they can count on, so ponder the possibilities for your family.

  4. Stay organized.

Don’t be scared of this one, either! Organization doesn’t have to be time-consuming, intimidating, or stressful. In fact, staying organized just makes things easier on a day-to-day basis. To get started, take a look at our list of helpful organizational tools for homeschoolers.

  5. Be consistent.

Start small and take baby steps, because they all add up. A consistent effort each day, however imperfect, adds up significantly over time and is where progress is made. Remember, kids tend to love consistency just as much as they love schedules.

  6. Enjoy learning!

When you teach your children to love learning, you’re opening unlimited doors and opportunities for them to explore and enjoy the topics they find personally fascinating all through their lives. Moreover, it’s a gift that keeps on giving forever!

  7. Be the teacher your child needs.

Reinforce the positive, listen to your child, and avoid comparisons … those are just some ways you can be the teacher your child needs.

  8. Find support and encouragement.

Local homeschooling groups are a great way to form friendships with other homeschooling families, while online support groups are a 24/7 source of encouragement, tips, and advice.
